Fire Alarm?

One thing that's really a pain to deal with when working in a 'big' multi-tenant office building is dealing with alarms. ANY alarm, whether it be the annual/biannual/quarterly check for the fire alarm or a tornado drill, to the actual alarms that you never find out the cause of.

Not to say we get them that often (when I'm here, anyway)... but we're, of course, on the upper floor(s) since we own the building, so there's lots of stairs and crowding to deal with. Just a pain.

A fire alarm went off today, just in time for lunch. Three fire trucks were out front with guys in gear, so it wasn't just a drill... but do you think there's been an indication of what caused it or if it there was truly a fire on one of the floors? Of course not.

Pure Exhaustion

Have you ever had one of those days where you're just too tired to function? Or if you can get moving, as soon as you have an opportunity to relax, you just konk out for a couple of hours? Yeah... that was me today, for some reason.

I didn't do anything yesterday that could cause me to be so tired (that I remember, anyway). I got plenty of sleep last night. But around 4:30pm today, I sat down and turned the TV on for the first time all weekend only to find myself out like a light! Complete with some weird dreams. Maybe I got too much sleep last night? No... in all honesty, it was a normal amount.

What really sucks, though, it's it probably going to keep me up tonight. I think I slept just long enough to make my body think bedtime is much later tonight. Sucky. :P

Race for the Cure!

Yesterday I participated in the "Race for the Cure" in downtown Indy. Wow... that's all I can say.

Being that it was my first year participating, I really wasn't sure what to expect. I was in awe of all of the people - over 43,000 is what the paper read this morning!! That's a lot!! It was crazy to look back as you crossed over the White River bridge and saw the thousands of people behind you! And all of them, at a minimum, paid the $25 entry fee. Again, a lot!!! That money is definitely for a good cause. PLUS, people pledged and raised money in addition to those fees. Personally, I had great support from friends and family and raised over $500!! THANK YOU to all who helped out!

I will definitely do this again. Even despite the rain that fell on us during the walk... it was worth it. :)

A Whole Lot of Shaking going on!

So where were you for the big Midwest Earthquake of 2008??

I was in bed. Where else am I expected to be just before 5:37am? And it woke me up. I was laying there in bed, I heard a rumble, and my house started to creak in ways I've never heard it creak before. And it shook. I shook! For a decent amount of time, too - close to a minute, easily! And all I could think is, "Cool - my first earthquake!"

Okay... so maybe it wasn't as big or comparable to what they get in California, but for the Midwest, this is a big deal!! It was registered as a 5.4 magnitude on the Richter Scale, which matched the largest earthquake previously noted in history back in 1968 (yes... I did a little research after this morning). Today's earthquake was felt as far a 360 miles away up in Milwaukee. There were even some reports of tremors out in Des Moines, about 450 miles away!

Here's your trivia on our little 'earthquake region' (from the AP)...

"The quake occurred in the Illinois basin-Ozark dome region that covers parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas and stretches from Indianapolis and St. Louis to Memphis, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The organization's Web site said earthquakes occur irregularly in the area, and that the largest historical earthquake in the region — also a magnitude 5.4 — caused damage in southern Illinois in 1968."

So there you have it. Indiana can be exciting! I know I was excited, anyway! :)

Update - 10:30am: How is it that they can change the magnitude of not only today's earthquake (they're now saying it was only a 5.2 magnitude - did the computer change its mind??), but also of the previously noted historical 'big one' I mentioned?? They're saying the biggest was now 5.3, not 5.4. Do records change themselves?? Weird.

Today I Mourn

As many of you may have heard, last night a horrible thing happened.Tragic, some might say. Well, at least I might say...

Northwest and Delta came to a merger agreement. What does that mean? That means I'm screwed. Mainly because they plan to keep the Delta name and the Delta way. And you all know how I feel about Delta. They suck.

Honestly, I feel that Northwest is the better airline, as well as the more versatile airline with their destinations. Definitely better customer service, as I have experienced personally. I've told you my woes with them, but I often to fail to tell of the good things they do (that don't come from my complaints), which does happen.

And the big kicker... this means no more Mountain Dew on my flights when the merger is said and done. There are no Coke products I like. None. I've tried them all. So it'll be all water, all the time, I guess. This may seem minor to most of you, but when you're a Pepsi product follower, especially Mountain Dew, you learn to appreciate and become a loyal customer of establishments that choose to serve Pepsi over Coke.

But that's for another blog.

The good news... this merger won't be said and done for 6-8 months. They have to go through a lot of red tape. So I have Northwest as Northwest until the end of the year, or close to it. That's good. but after that... :(

So I put out to all of my friends out there... help me in my push for JetBlue to come to Indy! They are the Consumer Reports #1 rated airline, and there's reason for that (they have TV's in the seats!). But they're not in Indy. Yet. We have a new terminal coming this fall, and they fly all around us. So go out to JetBlue.com and under 'Where We Fly', if you scroll down to Helpful Info (on the bottom right of the page) where it has a link to "Tell Us Where You Want to Fly". Tell them you what Indianapolis, IN (IND) as a new destination from any airport you want that they already have flights to (I just put "FL destinations").

Sorry... shameless plug, but I have a feeling when all is said and done, we're going to lose options for flights as a 'middle city' when this deal is done. ATA is gone for good, and I'm sure quite a few of the Northwest flights will be pulled (for those who don't know, IND was a 'focus city' for Northwest, which meant we weren't quite a hub, but they had a lot more directs out of IND than most of their locations). JetBlue goes to some good places. We could use some more good places to go.

Spring Tease?

So last weekend I went to Denver, and it was GORGEOUS out there!! Mid-60's in the peak of the day and bright and sunny. While there, I hear that the weather was similar back here in Indiana, so I thought, "Great!! Spring finally came!"

Wrong!

There's a chance of snow tonight. SNOW! What is up with that?? Is Mother Nature just a tease?? Is she toying with our emotions? Does she think this is funny???

So frustrating.

Next weekend is the Race for the Cure... I hope the weather comes and stays before the weekend. I'm not sure I can handle anything below, say, 60! I'm guessing I won't be so lucky. :P

Denver

Last weekend I took a trip out to Denver to see some friends. It was a blast!! They have kids, so we did some kid friendly stuff, like the zoo and a relatively easy hike in Roxborough State Park. The views are still awesome, though, and the weather was perfect! So here's some pics to share with you... when I see this, it makes me remember why I tried so hard to get a job out there after Auburn... maybe one day, still. :)

A Letter to Northwest

Yes... they did it to me again...

"Is Northwest just having trouble maintaining their planes, in general, or just the ones I get to travel on?

Of the past 4 times I have traveled on Northwest, which has been in less than a two month period, I have missed three connections. Though one was weather related, the others were extreme maintenance issues. I have been delayed even more on second segments due to maintenance or waiting for other passengers. But the most recent trip took the cake.

I had a round trip flight to JAX. On the way down to JAX, my IND-DTW segment was smooth and on time. My DTW-JAX segment had a two hour delay due to maintenance. It would’ve been nice to be at my hotel before midnight since I had to lead a meeting first thing the next morning. But I initially shrugged it off since I still made it to JAX. However, the trip back completely flipped my attitude about that delay.

In leaving JAX to head to DTW, we had an hour delay due to the lavatory malfunctioning, which at the end of that delay, they merely slapped an “Out of Order” sign on the door. I only had a 55 minute layover. But I didn’t fret because I thought we’d make up some time in the air and though tight, I might still make the last leg. Besides, it was the last flight out of DTW to IND for the night, and I can’t count the number of times I’ve been on that flight or another ‘last flight’ where they held the plane for incoming connecting passengers that had delays. I thought for sure I’d be close enough that they would do that. Oh how I was wrong. The best part, is when I checked the status, it had left the gate, but hadn’t left the ground yet. So I missed it by mere minutes.

Why is it I can always by ‘inconvenienced’ to wait for delayed connecting passengers but on this day, they had to leave on the minute they were scheduled to, full knowing they had at least one connecting passenger about to land?

So I had no way home via air, and had to be in the office this morning. I had to resort to renting a car to drive home the 4 hours to IND so I can make my meeting in the AM. Of course, since I had to rent at the counter without a reservation, they charged me a pretty premium. So there was another $200 out of my pocket that my company will probably not reimburse since I was supposed to be on a flight at that time, instead.

I used to defend Northwest when people would go off on how horrible they were and untimely their flights were. I never had problems like this until recently. Now I’m starting to understand where they were coming from."

Let's see how they respond this time. :P

UPDATE 4/8/08: Wow... they really came through this time. Every time I get down on Northwest, their Customer Service comes through and ultimately reminds me why I continue to fly with them - they do, ultimately, take care of their passengers, though it may be after some harsh reality. Not only did they throw 20,000 miles my way, they are reimbursing me for the rental car I had to get between DTW and IND.
